10 reasons why Quantico’s Priyanka Chopra is our ultimate woman crush
In case you didn’t already know, Priyanka Chopra is the queen of everything. Since she was crowned Miss World for repping India in 2000, this beauty with a brain has carved out an awesome acting career for herself with 55 acting credits to her IMDb page, had a handful of hugely successful musical hits, and has become the first Bollywood star to transition seamlessly into an American TV star (while still staying active in Bollywood).
Chopra is currently dominating the West as leading lady Alex Parrish in the ABC hit show Quantico, and her role as a fiercely competitive FBI recruit at the top of her class who becomes the prime suspect in a terrorist attack has made her the second South Asian woman to headline an American network series after Mindy Kaling in The Mindy Project. So, in celebration of International Women’s Day and the launch of Quantico in the UK this Thursday, we’re looking at Priyanka’s journey to world domination. Long may she reign.
1. She’s owning it on all corners of the globe.
As evidenced by this pic from PC’s Instagram of her concurrent roles as Alex Parrish in Quantico and Kashibai in Bollywood drama Bajirao Mastani, this hardworking woman is grabbing the acting world by the cojones. Last year she starred in two blockbuster movies and filmed an entire 22-episode season of an American primetime drama. Say whaaat?! How is that even possible?
2. She’s passionate about her causes.
PC isn’t afraid to speak out for what’s right, and is widely known for her philanthropic activities. She was appointed as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights in 2010, donated money to build a cancer ward in her father’s memory, has campaigned for PETA and other environmental organisations, and is particularly vocal about women’s issues, including safety, gender equality, and gender pay inequality. Preach.
3. She shows the bullies who’s boss.
Chopra’s spoken out on numerous occasions about her experiences of racist bullying while studying in America. We love how she’s overcoming the haters with straight up grace, while being an inspiration for other women and men of colour to not be bitter; be better.
“I witnessed a lot of racism and that’s exactly why I came back to India. I was 16 years old. I was called ‘Brownie’ and some even told me “Go back to where you came from”. At that point in time, I couldn’t deal with it. So when these international opportunities came to me, beginning with my music, I decided to try and bring relevance to Indian talent because I was given the opportunity.”
Yep, she’s grabbed that opportunity and pretty much started a movement with it.
4. She has zero time for racist stereotypes of Indians.
We love how carefully PC picks her roles, and how forcefully she demands the positive representation of Indian characters. Here she is speaking about her role in Quantico:
“When [ABC] came to me for this deal about the show, I told them very clearly that I’d do it if you cast me as an ethnically ambiguous part. I mentioned that the fact that I am an Indian should have nothing to do with the story, cast me an actor. And they did. They found me a part which is half Indian and half Caucasian. I play an FBI agent and the story has nothing to do with my big family or me wearing henna or any of those stereotypes.”
“Everybody doesn’t speak like Apu from The Simpsons. We all don’t smell of curry. We all are not ugly-looking nerds, who are shy and always keep sitting behind their computers. Yes, we are very proud of our big families but that doesn’t mean ki har gaadi mein se 15 log bahar niklenge. In global pop-culture, we are always represented like that. I wanted to break that”.
5. She did a song with Pitbull.
Back in 2011, Chopra signed on with Universal Music Group for a worldwide recording agreement with South Asian media company DesiHits, allowing her to create tracks that fuse the best of both musical worlds. Her single “Exotic” featuring Pitbull boasts over 82.7 million hits on YouTube, and she’s also collaborated with will.i.am and Jay Sean. Is there anything she can’t do?
6. She’s the villain in the new Baywatch movie.
We already know that Piggy Chops is fierce as f***, so we can’t wait to see her take a turn for the villainous in the upcoming big screen reboot of Baywatch alongside co-stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Zac Efron. By the sounds of this video, Chopra’s character Victoria Leeds is gonna give the boys a run for their money when the movie hits theatres next year!
7. She loves junk food as much as we do.
Whether she’s scoffing a burger before the People’s Choice Awards red carpet, or chilling with a hotdog wearing some damn fine shades on set, the lady knows how to eat. She also beat Jimmy Fallon in a hot wing eating contest while still managing to look absolutely on fleek. Sigh…
8. She trumps Trump.
In a world where bigoted New York billionaire Donald Trump might, to our horror, become the next President of the United States, we find solace in the fact that a woman of colour is trending higher than him on social media for doing something awesome.
9. She owns this hat.
We want it. We must have it. Where can we get it?
10. She SLAYS in Quantico.
When Priyanka’s character Alex gets framed for committing a terrorist attack, she uses all her skills and knowledge to outsmart everyone around her, while we watching at home punch the air with glee.
“She’s an incredible character. She’s like a female Jason Bourne. She’s smart, she’s sexy, she’s sassy. … She’s the quintessential woman. She’s everything I would want to be as a girl and yet at the same time, she’s super-feminine. She may be badass and in fights and she handles guns, but she’s a celebration of womanhood and I love that about her”, Priyanka says about Alex. We sure love that about her too.
Make sure you’re watching Quantico when it begins this Thursday March 10th at 9pm, only on Alibi.
