Baz Luhrmann Netflix series ‘The Get Down’ gets fly new trailer
“This ain’t Disneyland; this is the Bronx”
With less than a month to go til its August 12th launch date, Baz Luhrmann’s music-driven Netflix drama The Get Down has got a new trailer.
Named after an old funk term for the section of a record that makes people dance, the latest project from the Australian auteur who brought us Romeo + Juliet and The Great Gatsby focusses on a group of kids growing up in late-1970s New York; a world where hip-hop rises from the ashes of disco.
Blending a tasty concoction of music and dance genre, the trailer alludes to the intertwining strands of each character’s story, including Shameik Moore, Justice Smith, Tremaine Browne Jr. and Skylan Brooks as a crew of teenagers exploring the musical upheavals in their neighbourhood, and Herizen Guardiola as an aspiring disco diva from a disapproving religious family – in particular her father, as played by Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito.
“The overview of this thing is that New York is in chaos,” supervising producer Nelson George told Entertainment Weekly. “Symbolically, disco and hip-hop are kind of at war with each other”.
Also starring Jaden Smith, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Jimmy Smits, part one of The Get Down is due to premiere on Netflix on August 12th.
