Captain America’s Hayley Atwell endorses Phoebe Waller-Bridge for new Doctor Who
Captain America and Agent Carter star Hayley Atwell wants Phoebe Waller-Bridge to be the next Doctor in Doctor Who.
The actor, who was appearing as part of a Captain America panel with co-star Stanley Tucci at the weekend, was originally asked by a fan whether she would like the role of the first female Doctor for herself.
Tucci immediately shouted “Yes!”, but Atwell was more reserved. She admitted: “No, I don’t want to play that, no, it’s not my thing, but I really respect it.”
However, she went on to explain her reasoning for this by revealing she would much rather Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge took on the coveted position after the departure of Peter Capaldi.
Atwell said: “One of the reasons why I say that is because I’m a really big fan of an actress called Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who did Fleabag – she won a BAFTA for it.
“She’s so amazing and there were talks of her being the next Doctor. She’s so funny and eccentric and unique that I think she would be brilliant.”
She continued: “All the doctors have reinvented themselves and they were all so different and effective, and I can’t really see anyone else other than Phoebe playing it.”
Peter Capaldi announced he would be stepping down from portraying the titular Time Lord earlier this year, after playing the role since 2013.
A number of names have been thrown in the mix as potential successors, including My Family‘s Kris Marshall and Fleabag‘s Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
