EXCLUSIVE: “We hope J.K. Rowling is watching Sharknado” – TVDaily Interviews Jedward
In anticipation of their acting debut in SyFy‘s third installment of the Sharknado film series, TVDaily caught up with Irish twins John and Edward Grimes – otherwise known as Jedward – at the Soho Hotel.
So are you guys fans of the first two Sharknado movies?
J: The biggest!
E: It’s actually kind of crazy because we were at Universal Studios in Los Angeles and this little kid had a Sharknado top on.. it was so cool.
J: Yeah, it’s fun! You know how people have Twitter accounts and are tweeting about things and it’s cool that people go on Twitter and are like ‘I’m going to write something about this’, even if it’s good or bad, it doesn’t matter, people go on and are like “Oh, I watched Sharknado”. And Vines, too. It’s all good because you can see it all on social media whilst you’re watching it. You can see people’s funny comments like “I be like this when that happened”, and funny Vines and GIFs.
We thought we read a spoiler about the fate of your characters in Sharknado 3… We don’t know if it’s true, but it sounds like it would be very social media friendly 😉
J: Haha! I think it’s going to be good for social media anyway, because Jedward are in it!
E: Like every time we don’t appear on Eurovision, everyone’s like “No Jedward? Where’s Jedward!?”
J: It’s all good also because we wrote the song for the movie, “Oh Hell No!”
We were listening to it all day in the office!
J: Were you?!
E: No you weren’t
J: You were not. We don’t believe you!
E: Hmm, of course you were!
J: Anyway, it comes out tonight (22.07.15) at midnight.
E: It’s actually really exciting because we’re going to have a massive party on Thursday.
J: Yeah, we’re throwing it.
E: And we’re going to have a hot tub and everything!
J: Yeah, we’re going all out, in London!
E: We spent like £20,000 on the party.
J: Yeah, MTV are going to record it. It’s gonna be like one of their Sweet Sixteen parties.
E: This is like the Super Sweet Sixteen that we never had, so we’re very excited.
J: Hopefully loads of people turn up to the par-tay!
E: We’ll show up at our own party and be like “Oh my gosh, Jedward came to my party!”
J: Like Sharknado balloons of Sharks that will probably burst.
‘Daniel Radcliffe’s a huge fan. We saw him in Harry Potter, and now he’s going to watch us in Sharknado.
Can you tell us anything more about your appearance in Sharknado 3, or is it all top secret?
E: Look, we’re just Jedward in the movie. We’re not doing anything.
J: We’re in it for like a couple of seconds, okay?
E: But it’s the best.
J: It’s fine, it’s all good. We had a main role that we couldn’t do because we didn’t have our visas and stuff, but it’s ok. But shhh.
E: It’s okay, there’s going to be more Sharknados to star in…
J: Yeah, I feel like SyFy could easily be ‘SyFy/Sharknado Channel’.
E: I hope J.K. Rowling is watching, and gives us the next Harry Potter spinoff! ‘Cause we know a couple of spells like expelliarmus and stuff.
J: And Daniel Radcliffe’s a huge fan of Sharknado! I can’t believe that he likes it, and we’re in it, so he’ll be watching us. ‘Cause we saw him in Harry Potter, and now he’s going to watch us in Sharknado.
E: It’s like there are normal TV shows that are watched by the general public, but Sharknado’s watched by the entertainment world, and we’ve had loads of celebrities in it, and they all watch it. Isn’t that right, John?
Were there are any funny moments on set?
E: Well, Tara [Reid] had this pregnant baby thing… and it was so heavy that she would have to take it off because it was like ultra weightlifting.
J: And we had all these CDs.
E: Yeah, we were playing like Michael Jackson and blasting it and everyone was going crazy.
J: Yeah like we were blasting Michael Jackson in Tara’s Winnebago and they were like “We’re filming” and had to come and make us turn it off. And making Vines was fun, we started making Vines.
E: Yeah Tara made a Vine saying she was pregnant, and…
J: …and then I had one of those massive – what are they called? Fire extinguishers? And were like “shhhhhh” with all the air, and Tara was like “It’s too dangerous!”, but we still did it anyway. It was crazy, I mean other funny moments just happened and I don’t register them, but they happened, but then I just move along to the next one. Do you know what I mean? A lot of funny things have happened since February. I need to get a ‘funny moment’ diary to write it all down.
How well do you think Jedward would survive in a real sharknado?
E: I think everyone would be running around the place trying to get selfies with us, so we wouldn’t be able to escape the sharknado.
J: Yeah! It’s like “Ahhhhhhhh!!! … Oh, it’s Jedward? Let’s just get a picture real quick”..
E: I’d make sure I was just in the safest place possible. I wouldn’t try to run, I would be hiding from the sharks.
J: I’d go somewhere bulletproof.
E: No, I would find an aquarium! And like, go to the aquarium and start swimming with the fish and be like “what’s happening??”.
J: No, I would go to the zoo and just huddle with the penguins, and hope for the best.
E: No, I would hang out in the freezer and just freeze myself ’til the sharknado’s over.
J: *to TVDaily journo* I’d just stay at your house… Nah I’m just kidding, you’d probably be dead!
Are there any celebrities that you guys would like to see caught up in a sharknado?
E: I’d like to see all the Kardashians get caught up in a sharknado. See how they deal with it.
J: I would like to see all of One Direction caught up in the sharknado, so we could all sing “The Story of My Life” together. It would go like “The story of my life, a sharknado just hit, the story of my life, yeah”.
E: I’d like to get caught in a sharknado with Britney Spears. And Katy Perry, so we could sing “Roar” while we’re in the sharknado. And then Katy and all of us would bring out tigers and lions to take out all the sharks.
J: We would be singing like “I used to be an old person, now I’m caught up in a sharknado, oh no, here comes a shark, better start roaring”.
‘Tara came to Ireland to stay in our house for like a month.
Our granny thought she was Marilyn Monroe.’
Have you already seen the film? What was your favourite scene?
E: Yes! My favourite scene in the film is when they go in a big massive…
J: …my favourite part of the film was seeing Tara in an astronaut outfit, ‘cause they go to space!
E: Shh, no one’s meant to know!
J: And seeing David Hasselhoff, and all these familiar faces is great. They’re all great.
E: Hmm, my favourite scene would have to be…
J: My favourite scene is when they’re trying to pick a baby name and Tara’s mum is like “I think June”, and Tara’s like “No! April, May, June, that’s ridiculous”.
E: Because Tara’s called April and her mum’s called May and the mum wanted to call the baby June. It was really funny.
What was it like working with all the big names on Sharknado?
E: It’s really cool because you meet all these people and they don’t really care who you are. Nobody cares who anyone is, it’s just if you’re nice, then they’ll give you the time.
But you guys are quite good friends with Tara, having been in the Celebrity Big Brother house together?
J: Yeah, we did Celebrity Big Brother together, I think we lived in the house for like three weeks, and then Tara came to Ireland for like a month to stay in our house and live with our granny. Our granny thought she was Marilyn Monroe.
So you still speak to Tara often?
J: Ok, literally, we talk to her all the time. We literally talked to her just before this, at like 2 o’clock.
E: And then she was messaging us. She’s in New York right now doing press.
‘It’s like a status thing. Other celebrities have Rolexes and stuff, but we’ve been in Sharknado.’
David Hasselhoff said that Sharknado 3 is the worst film you’ll ever see.
So what do you think about that?
J: Trust me, there’s been a lot of worser movies. The thing I hate is when you see a movie that’s cost billions and billions of dollars to make, and it’s literally like “What was that?”. Like they spend more time on the props than they do on the storyline.
E: I think Sharknado has a lot of impact, it has lots of…
J: I think Sharknado, if they had to pay all the celebrities and all the people who are in the movie, it would be the biggest budget movie ever.
E: Yeah loads of cameos, loads of people just want to be in it.
J: It’s like a status thing. Other celebrities have Rolexes and stuff, but we’ve been in Sharknado. And then to people who are like “No, I haven’t been in it” it’s like “Sorry”.
And how did you find working with all the CGI?
E: We met this really cool guy who did this show in America… What was his name? Eric?
E: Was it Eric?
J: Oh yeah! Yeah it was great to see how they do all the building of the sharks, and they build a lot of stuff as well. All the stuff was real and then everything around us was faked on CGI so we had to like… Before, we did a music video, and that was called “Luminous”, and that was like all green screened, and then they made us…
E: It’s sort of all imagination – you have to imagine what’s going on. So you’re told “Ok, there’s gonna be a shark coming”.
J: So you’re doing your thing and someone yells like “Shark!” and you’re like “Ahhhh!”.
E: And the director yells like “Shark! Ah! Now it’s raining!”. That’s how they do it.
J: It’s all good, guys.
E: All good, all good.
Do you know any good shark jokes?
E: I don’t know any jokes, the only joke I know is like…
J: “Are you a shark? ‘Cause you’re biting gorgeous”.
E: Ok John. That’s not a shark joke. We actually have no jokes, ever.
J: “Are you a shark book? ‘Cause I wanna take you out”.
E: John’s merging normal jokes with sharks, putting a shark in there.
J: “How did the shark cross the road? He Jednadoed over the road”.
Or “Are you a shark? Because you’re spinning around my head like a sharknado”.
E: Oh that’s really cool. I like that one, John. That’s cool. That’s the one! I’m gonna tweet that on the night of our Screamathon thing. We’re doing a thing, we’re gonna go tweeting about it on Thursday, aren’t we John?
Because we’re TVDaily, we have to ask you; What’s your favourite TV show?
E: I like Young and Hungry. Have you seen that? It’s really good! It has Emily Osment in it. That’s on its second season right now.
J: I also like Younger with Hilary Duff. And we love Gotham, that’s great. There’s like 22 episodes, it gets really good towards the end. And we like Desperate Housewives…
E: And F.R.I.E.N.D.S! F.R.I.E.N.D.S is always on TV. And I like The Simpsons.
J: Yeah some F.R.I.E.N.D.S episodes I’ve seen ten times.
E: We like some intense TV shows, but it’s good to watch the easy-going TV shows where you don’t have to pay that much attention. What other TV shows do we like, John?
J: We like watching our own TV shows, like Jedward’s Big Adventure.
‘We would love to do a song with John Williams’
What have you got coming up in the future?
E: Working on new music! We’ve got a song called “Leave A Mark” coming out on August 14th.
J: “Oh Hell No!” comes out tonight at midnight.
E: And we have more music videos coming, and we’re always spontaneous and do surprises. You’ll know about it. You’ll be interviewing us.
J: Oh and Nick Carter’s making a movie, so we’ll try to get into that movie.
And are there any other actors or musicians that you’d really like to work with in the future?
E: David Hasselhoff says he wants to do a song with us, so we’ll probably start working on that.
J: And I would love to do a song with John Williams. He does all the soundtracks to Superman and stuff, he’s like 80 or something. And I would love to work with Steven Spielberg on a movie. Avatar 2 [actually directed by James Cameron – Ed]. Oh, have you seen Jurassic World?
E: Oh, the redhead! You don’t think she’s going to be that prominent in the movie, then she ends up being the main character. She’s really cool. Rocking the redheads.
J: What other movies have we seen? Oh we saw Ant-Man.
So after your taste of disaster with Sharknado, you’re trying to go for the next Jurassic World?
J: It’s all good, you can do whatever you want! I mean, Chris Evans started out in Not Another Teen Movie.
E: Yeah, that was like… Not even American Pie level.
J: And the thing about Tara is she just ‘makes’ people. Like she made Ashton Kutcher, Jared Leto, the other guy, whatever his name is… Ryan Reynolds. So anybody who stars in a movie with Tara at a young age goes on to become the biggest film star in the world.
E: Yeah. Let’s do it *winking*.
Told by their management that we have to wrap up, Jedward grab the sheet of questions and dictaphone, and take the remainder of the interview into their own hands.
– Yes we’d do Eurovision again, Eurovision’s always awesome.
– Is it hard to go out without being recognised? We never walk around without caps on, and we walk on parallel sides of the street.
– What’s your favourite fan experience? A fan wrapped themselves up in wrapping paper and mailed themselves to our house. And a fan in Finland had the world record for the longest fan letter ever. I think it was 400 metres long. It was really big, anyway. And another fan gets a tattoo of every single one of our songs that comes out.
– Download the Jedward news app.
– Sharknado 3 out July 23rd.
We think it’s fair to say that the boys have pretty much nailed it in the self-promotion department. Nevertheless, Sharknado 3, starring Jedward, Tara Reid, Ian Ziering, David Hasselhoff and more premieres on Thursday (23.07.15) at 10pm, exclusively on SyFy.
