Nick Grimshaw working on Top of the Pops spinoff
Hoping to fill the gap that’s been in our viewing schedules since 2006, Radio 1 DJ and former X Factor judge Nick Grimshaw has announced he’s working on a new show in the same vein as Top of the Pops.
Speaking with The Sun, Grimmy said he is currently “in talks” to front a new chart TV show to showcase the week’s best music in TOTP style.
The popular DJ revealed he is working with his friend Aimee [most likely Aimee Phillips, co-writer on Sweat the Small Stuff] in the hope of stepping into the niche that’s never truly been filled since Top of the Pops was taken off the air in 2006, after more than 40 years.
Talks of a rebooted Top of the Pops were bandied about last year, with the BBC’s director of music Bob Shennan saying he was hoping to rebrand and relaunch the show in “Top Gear style”, but things eventually went quiet on that front.
Describing the new project, Grimshaw added: “It’s what we need, so I’m going to make it happen. It’s my mission”.
We’re keen to see what comes of it!
