Tameka Empson admits her surprise over being voted off Strictly Come Dancing
EastEnders actress Tameka Empson has confessed that she was shocked to be the second celebrity voted to leave Strictly Come Dancing.
Following the dramatic bottom-two ordeal in the first week, in which Melvin Odoom was eliminated after Anastacia was unable to perform, last weekend’s episode saw yet another shock exit.
To the dismay of the judges and viewing public alike, Tameka found herself facing the dance-off with presenter Laura Whitmore on Sunday night’s result show.
The contestant had delivered a solid Tango routine to “The Heat Is On” from Beverly Hills Cop during the show’s movie themed week. The 39-year-old celebrity, along with her professional partner Gorka, received a respectable 28\40 from the judges, which led to some confusion when she discovered she was in the bottom two.
Speaking to Zoe Ball on It Takes Two on Monday, Tameka admitted she was both disappointed and surprised by the result.
She confessed: “I was surprised if I’m honest, not being big headed. I didn’t put a foot wrong and being in that character.”
The star informed the host that she had suffered a back injury, but did not want to let it affect her performance: “I had a bit of pain in my back but I used that pain to drive through.”
Could this have been a bit of a dig at fellow contestant Anastacia after the previous week’s drama?
However, Tameka insisted: “They are a great group of people. The talent was tough this year, but think it was a great year for me to do it.”
“I’m going to keep dancing. I love it. I love the whole process.”
The interview ended with Tameka getting a bit emotional as she revealed how she was looking forward to doing the Cha Cha and the Rumba. She said: “I know I’m not what you call a dancer, a dancer type, but I did put the work in.”
She added tearfully: “I didn’t want it to be so short for Gorka.”
Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 6:45pm on BBC One.
