There will be a New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossover episode
Popular US sitcoms New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine have announced a crossover episode is in the works.
The news was first announced by US network FOX at the TCA Press Tour yesterday (Monday, August 7), who described it as “The Comedy Crossover Event of the Year”.
Despite the shows being set in different states – New Girl in California and Brooklyn Nine-Nine in New York – the casts will come together for an episode set in New York.
FOX chairman and CEO Dana Walden told TCA press that “the shows definitely feel compatible, and they came up with a really fun story for the crossover”.
“If it feels organic and like something that can exist between the two shows, I find most creators are open to anything that will “event-ize” their shows. It was a fresh and fun idea for them.”
The episode is said to air on Tuesday, October 11 on FOX US. This will be the third episode in both show’s seasons, after they return together on September 20.
New Girl creator Elizabeth Meriwether said: “The crossover episode has historically been the artistic high point of any show that has dared to attempt it.
“Maybe you remember ‘Blackout Thursday’ on NBC, or even further back the infamous Alf/Gilligan’s Island crossover of the late 1980s. New Girl and Brooklyn Nine-Nine will proudly and humbly go where few shows have gone since the 1990s.
“We know we have big shoes to fill, and we look forward to disappointing everyone. There’s a 50% chance Alf will also be in both episodes. But there’s also a 50% chance that is a lie.”
